NME Awards noms out
By Chris Cooke | Published on Wednesday 15 January 2014
So let’s see shall we, has it stopped sounding odd having an American city sponsoring the NME’s annual awards bash yet? Testing, testing, testing. No, it hasn’t. So yes, the noms are out for this year’s “NME Awards with Austin, Texas”.
Haim and the Arctic Monkeys do particularly well in the shortlists, while Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles are up for the East Target Award, aka Villain Of The Year. Actually, while it would be nice for nominees Pussy Riot and Vladimir Putin to respectively win the Hero and Villain prizes, I’m rather hoping Russell Brand, considered a hero by half of the NME’s readership, and a villain by the other half, wins both.
And now, NME Editor Mike Williams on a year that has had everything, the NME readership noticing this, and more people than ever voting to compile some incredibly exciting shortlists: “The past twelve months of music have had everything – returning legends, era-defining singles, more albums with a claim to be modern classics than any year in recent memory and tons of massive live moments to celebrate”.
He goes on: “None of this has gone unnoticed by NME’s huge audience, with more people than ever voting to compile these incredibly exciting shortlists. I can’t wait for the ceremony at the Brixton Academy on 26 Feb to find out who the big winners will be”.
