Digital promo platform FATdrop, which many labels use to distribute pre-release content to DJs, journalists and other opinion formers, earlier this week announced it is launching a new premium service offering extra functionality to those at the receiving end of the tracks being promoted.

The add-on services are mainly aimed at professional DJs and will be accessible via a FATdrop app, and include “a fully syncable promo inbox, including playback and download functionality, even when the device is out of signal or offline”.

The premium service costs £3.99 a month, and it’s the DJ who will pay the subscription fee. Says FATdrop: “At a time when labels of all stripes are under huge financial pressures, the move is an attempt to rebalance the ecosystem, reducing pressure on those labels – many of which operate as a labour of love – and allows DJs to offer greater support to the record business”.

Of course, while superstar DJs are some of the highest earners in music, plenty of others spinning tunes in clubs and on the radio operate on much more limited means, while the media many of them work for are often facing financial pressures as significant as the labels, and in some cases more so.

However, FATdrop stresses that their current service is still available to DJs and journalists for free, and that the new premium set-up is for those clubbing and media contacts who would appreciate the extra functionality, and not mind paying a little for it.

The company’s Founder and Director, Alex Stacey told CMU: “We spoke to a number of DJs and journalists at different levels in the industry when designing the new model and – although of course it’s not going to be right for everyone – we think it’ll click for a lot of people. Our goal here is to support the labels putting out great music and we hope that this will go some way towards doing that. It’s important to note that this is an additional tier and for those happy to send or receive promos in the same way they have been, they don’t need to change anything”.
