Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur dies
By Chris Cooke | Published on Wednesday 4 May 2016
Afeni Shakur, the activist mother of the late Tupac Shakur, has died aged 69. According to police, emergency services were called to Mrs Shakur’s Californian home on Monday night after she suffered a possible heart attack. She was taken to a local hospital and died just before 10.30pm.
An activist and member of the Black Panther movement in her early life, Shakur became better known through her son’s work, including the 1995 song ‘Dear Mama’, in which Tupac details his mother’s battle back from addiction. Following Tupac’s murder in 1996, Shakur managed her son’s estate, and was involved in the rapper’s many posthumous releases. She also set up the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.
A representative of the Tupac estate issued a statement yesterday, which said: “We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Afeni Shakur. Afeni embodied strength, resilience, wisdom, and love. She was a pioneer for social change and was committed to building a more peaceful world”.
