M(h)aol – pronounced ‘male’, translating to English as ‘bald’ – are not a band who leave you wondering what their lyrics are about. Staring down misogyny head on, vocalist Róisín Nic Ghearailt delivers her blunt lyrics over the buzzing, unnerving post-punk backing of Constance Keane (aka Fears), Jamie Hyland (who engineered and was immortalised in the title of Girl Band’s debut album ‘Holding Hands With Jamie’), Zoe Greenway and Sean Nolan.
The band are set to release their debut EP, ‘Gender Studies’, later this month and recently put live its barbed title track.
“‘Gender Studies’ weaves past and present in an exploration of how the construct of gender shapes our lives”, says Ghearailt. “From feeling like you’re not performing your gender right to the way it shapes how we move through the physical, sexual and romantic sphere, it marries urgent lyrics with a threatening yet (blank) sound”.
Fill in the blank yourself, I guess. But you’ll have to listen first. Good job there are plenty of opportunities to do that coming up. As well as the EP release on 29 Oct, the band will be heading out on a short tour of the UK in November, taking in Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester and London.
