Artist News CMU Approved Releases
Approved: GRLS
By Andy Malt | Published on Thursday 4 November 2021
Lucca Necoechea and Diego Andlovin – aka GRLS – started working together in 2018 while studying at the Berklee College Of Music, but quickly became so focussed on their new project that they both dropped out to focus on it more fully. They have, however, called on several of the musicians and songwriters they met during their brief stint at the college while recording their debut album, which is set for release next year.
Following on from ‘Lynch’, which was release through Kitsuné Musique last year, the duo are back with new single ‘Dystopia’ – featuring one of those Berklee contacts, Jackson Lundy – on Mexico City-based label Movida Música.
“‘Dystopia’ was conceived one night after a bad acid trip where the lyrics to the original song mutated to have a deeper meaning”, say the duo of the track. “The song became centred around PTSD, and the effects that war has on the brain. The accompanying music video was shot in Mexico City and focuses on a girl’s emotional state as she struggles to process the negative emotions associated with a past relationship; her feelings are aligned to the PTSD we experienced on our bad trip”.
Full details of their debut album are yet to be announced, but we’re told it will be “a unique multimedia experience”. Right now, you can watch the ‘Dystopia’ video here:
