Ash cloud could affect Coachella line up
By CMU Editorial | Published on Friday 16 April 2010
With the news this morning that planes will be grounded in the UK until after midnight tonight as this invisible ash cloud continues to float over the country, it looks increasingly likely that a number of UK acts will miss their sets at this weekend’s Coachella Festival.
A number of acts, including The Cribs, Gary Numan and Bernard Sumner’s Bad Lieutenant band, were due to fly to California for the festival yesterday or today. Those with Sunday sets could still make it, assuming flights do resume tomorrow morning, though given the chaos that will presumably be unleashed once the country’s airports reopen, that’s far from assured.
The airport shutdown won’t affect all UK acts booked to play because, of course. Many schedule in a mini-tour before and after the festival, meaning they are already in the US. But some other non-UK artists based in North Europe probably will be affected, given the air-space shut down has expanded across the continent in the last 24 hours.
Who’d have thought a volcano in Iceland could affect the line up of a festival in California. Still, there are some great photos of magma and stuff appearing online. You can’t beat a good volcanic eruption.
