Top Of The Pops repeats will continue
By Andy Malt | Published on Friday 11 January 2013
BBC Four will continue to show repeats of ‘Top Of The Pops’, the station has announced. As previously reported, a number of episodes from the 1977 archives were pulled from the schedules in the wake of the Jimmy Savile child abuse scandal.
As more editions were dropped last year as allegations were made against Saville and other former ‘TOTP’ presenters and performers, BBC Controller Richard Klein said: “At the moment we actually haven’t scheduled 1978, so we’ll take a view. We have only done it the last two years, so if we didn’t do it again it wouldn’t be the end of the world, and audience figures have declined quite markedly [anyway]. It has done a good job, [but] whether I choose to continue or not I don’t yet know”.
However, a spokesperson for the channel said yesterday that “‘Top Of The Pops’ is continuing [on BBC4] with 1978 this year”, though programmes featuring Jimmy Savile will not be shown. Gary Glitter, whose performances have been removed from previous repeats, did not appear on the show in 1978.
