Approved: Empress Of
By Aly Barchi | Published on Monday 4 November 2013
Signed to Double Denim in the UK – always a good sign – Empress Of, aka Lorely Rodriguez, is also one of Grizzly Bear man Chris Taylor’s quick-climbing Terrible Records set (as are Chairlift, Dev Hynes, Kindness and Violens).
Rodriguez got going earlier this year via her supersensual ‘Systems’ EP, whose four tracks, two in English and two in her native Spanish, fit into one another like Russian dolls, showing off a pliant, loose-fitting way with phrasings, and a willingness to dip into all kinds of genre pools.
Take in the twinkling, starry night synthscapes of ‘Hat Trick’ and a newer song not on the ‘Systems’ EP, ‘Realize You’, to get started. That, or go see Empress Of when she plays London’s Birthdays tomorrow (5 Nov).
