Apple’s Ping hooks into Twitter
By CMU Editorial | Published on Friday 12 November 2010
Twitter has announced a new partnership with Apple that will integrate the micro-blogging service with the incredibly rubbish iTunes Ping music recommendation service.
As a result of the new partnership, iTunes users can set it up so that whenever they buy, review or recommend a track via the Apple download store an alert is sent to their Twitter followers. Said followers will then be able to follow a link to listen to a preview clip of tipped music, 30 seconds in the UK but, as previously reported, soon to be 90 seconds in the US.
The alliance will make iTunes and Twitter work together a bit like the previously reported mFlow service, which isn’t a surprise, given everyone has described that as being “iTunes meets Twitter” (though I’m sure mFlow would point out that it offers full track previews and an account credit if a recommendation leads to a sale).
Twitter Business & Corporate Development man Kevin Thau announced the alliance on the social network’s blog, writing: “Starting today Ping, iTunes’ new social network for music, and Twitter are making it even easier for people to share music discoveries with their friends by putting Ping activity, song previews and links to purchase and download music from the iTunes Store right in their tweets on Twitter.com”.
