Dutch producer Dave Huismans first appeared in his 2562 guise in 2007, and made a big mark on the then rapidly ascending dubstep scene with his debut album ‘Aerial’, which saw him mix minimal techno into the genre, taking it in a different direction to where everyone else was headed at the time.
For his third album, ‘Fever’, released by his own When In Doubt label last year, he took yet another sharp turn, working within self-imposed boundaries of his chosen style, but restricting them further by only allowing himself to use samples culled disco records from the mid-70s to early 80s. With those samples cut and bent out of recognition, the result saw him pull round to a heavier techno sound, but still well ahead of the rest of his peers.
Later this month he is due to return with a new EP, ‘Air Jordan’, which sees him yet again creating music from a defined set of samples. However, these samples were recorded by Huismans himself on a roadtrip through Jordan just before he recorded ‘Fever’. With sounds collected as field recordings all around the country, from desert roads to bustling city centres, it’s yet another about turn for 2562, both refreshingly new and reassuringly recognisable as his work.
‘Air Jordan’ is due for release on vinyl on 19 Mar and digitally on 26 Mar. Check out a track from it, ‘Jerash Hekwerken’, here:
