Approved: Jay Johnson
By Andy Malt | Published on Wednesday 10 May 2017
Things have moved relatively quickly for singer-songwriter Jay Johnson. Still in his teens, he took up music after discovering a guitar in the attic, took up busking a couple of years later, played his first gig early last year and was an artist in residence at the Roundhouse in London a month later.
Watching his debut music video for new single ‘Midnight Men’, pre-empting a new EP, it’s easy to see why things are happening in such a speedy fashion for Johnson. Such a seemingly effortless performance immediately sets you at ease, but the skill in both his playing and songwriting are glaringly apparent. Plus, those hand movements are pretty hypnotic.
“Even though I play folk music, I mostly listen to rap, and I always have”, says Johnson. “The songs on the EP are dark and moody, but these topics matter, and shouldn’t be avoided”.
