Jófríður Ákadóttir can’t have a great deal of time on her hands. As well as performing with Samaris, Pascal Pinon and Gangly, she’s also now launching her solo project JFDR. Her first single under that name, ‘White Sun’, came out in November last year, showcasing a sparse, wispy sound that feels like it’s being carried past on a breeze.
For her second single, ‘Airborne’, she gives that sound something of a stress test, pummelling it with breakbeats. It stands up surprisingly well. Very well, in fact. The seemingly incongruous meeting of fast-paced drums and slow-paced piano creates the perfect tension for Ákadóttir’s vocals.
Recently cited by Björk as an inspiration, she must be doing something right. Watch the video for ‘Airborne’ here:
