A little over a year ago, Su Shaw brought her Panda Su project to an end, which – after two great EP releases – was a moment worth feeling deflated about. Although, that said, it had been some time since she’d released new music under that name, she seemingly being stuck in a creative rut for a number of years.
Thankfully, she promptly returned under the name Shhe, releasing her debut single ‘Eye’s Shut’. Now, newly signed to One Little Indian, she’s back with a second track, ‘Boy’.
With a more electronic sound than her previous work, and more sparsely layered arrangements, the Shhe project still allows Shaw’s engaging and inventive songwriting to shine through. These new songs, more of which she’s been airing live recently, find her back on a creative high.
“Sometimes we’re unwilling to let go and sometimes we’re unable to”, she says of the inspiration for ‘Boy’. “Willingness and ability are different things. How do you give yourself completely to someone when parts of you still remain with someone else? How much of your identity do you lose in the process?”
As well as the new songs, Shaw is also developing a longer form piece titled ‘Dýrafjörður’, named after an Icelandic fjord. That piece began as she took part in the Westfjords Residency last year, and is now being built into a performance combining sound, moving image and visual art.
