Approved: Spencer
By Andy Malt | Published on Thursday 2 July 2020
Back in 2018, Spencer dropped out of college to pursue a career in music. His grades were slipping, because he was spending too much time producing his growing catalogue of tracks. And so it was – presumably with some sense of irony – that he turned his back on a degree in sound recording. Soon after that day, he released his breakthrough single ‘Want U Back’ in 2018, and the rest, as they say, is what I’m here to talk to you about this morning.
With a strong series of singles and two EPs already to his name, Spencer is now gearing up to release his first EP for 4AD. It features lush, dreamy R&B singles like the previously released ‘Automatic’ and ‘2much’, and he’s now added another to the pile in the form of ‘Maybe’.
With a heavy backbeat and ominous synths, the track strikes a different tone to the other releases, but nevertheless continues the common thread of music that boasts a devastating combination of songwriting and production talents.
“A lot of these songs deal with the idea of problematic love”, he says of the songs that make up the upcoming EP. “No matter how much you care about a person, sometimes it’s just not a good fit, for you or for them, and the best thing you can do is go your separate ways”.
