Zella Day

A flower child of the Arizona mountains, Zella Day has so far made a slight splash with a simply ‘nice’ take on The White Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army’ and 2013’s similarly vanilla single, ‘No Sleep To Dream’.

But now signed to young imprint B3SCI alongside hot and sticky XL acquisitions Jungle, her new track ‘Sweet Ophelia’ signals a sea change in her style and image, from cherry pie prairie girl to LA-schooled popstar with something more to say.

And whilst it hitchhikes brazenly on the highway-to-Lana-Del-Rey, ‘Sweet Ophelia’ is an undeniably sleek ride, a ‘riches to rags’ road song racing over sticky snare rhythms and winding xylo bars towards its focal horizon; that soaring main hook.
