The Great Escape 2022

The Great Escape kicks off tomorrow! CMU is presenting three full day CMU+TGE strands this year – plus the TGE Elevate Sessions on Saturday for early-career talent and three keynote in conversations.

MUSIC+EDUCATION on Wednesday, with the Pathways Into Music Foundation, will analyse the wider music-maker community in 2022, and ask how music education and the music industry can better connect with and support the huge numbers of hobbyist and DIY phase artists releasing music today. We’ll identify the key knowledge and information DIY phase artists need access to – and how to get it to them. And we’ll look at the role of music funders and launch a brand new round of Pathways Into Music research mapping music education.

MUSIC+DATA on Thursday, presented in association with the BPI, will see us release the Setlist theme tune as a track, and then follow that track on its data journey, identifying what data is needed to get music played and artists paid. Plus we’ll look at how artists, labels, managers and promoters are utilising fan data to drive licensing, sell tickets and build a fan relationship. And we’ll explain all you need to know about blockchain, NFTs, metaverse and Web3.

MUSIC+VIDEO on Friday, presented in association with the BPI, will identify all the key trends and talking points in the sync market. We’ll talk buy-outs. We’ll talk licensing music when influencers and brands are posting online. And we’ll look at all the ways the music industry now uses video content to build an audience, stand out from the crowd, and monetise the fan relationship. Plus we’ll put the spotlight back on the metaverse and the opportunities and challenges it presents the music industry.

THE TGE ELEVATE SESSIONS on Saturday, supported by Arts Council England, is a day of panels and seminars for those earlier on in their music careers, providing a user-friendly guide to how artists build a business around their music, and the business partners they work with along the way. Plus pick from five speedy CMU:DIY seminars and join in on a live recording of CMU’s podcast Setlist.

And then there’s the three keynote in conversations – with the ‘Shape Of You’ legal team on Thursday at 12.45pm; Tom Gray, Kevin Brennan MP and Naomi Pohl on Thursday at 4.30pm; and music PR legend Barbara Charone on Friday at 12.45pm.
