The Creative Industries Council, which is both a thing and a whatnot, yesterday launched “an innovative new digital approach to promote the UK creative industry on the global stage”, which I think is a very creative way of saying “a new website”.

The Council provides a forum for reps from the various creative sectors in the UK and relevant branches of government, and the new site – www.thecreativeindustries.co.uk – provides an online hub for that activity, and for promoting and explaining the various creative industries.

The new website has launched at the same time as some new stats about the UK creative industries, including the quotable quote that between them the creative sectors generate £8 million an hour for the British economy. And only £6.8 million of that is generated by One Direction and ‘Downton Abbey’. Probably.

Launching the new website, the government’s top culture bod Maria Miller told CMU: “There can be no doubt that the creative industries are a powerhouse within the UK economy. We should be incredibly proud that they are one of the most influential and diverse sectors of the UK economy and a world leader. The launch of this new digital initiative as part of the wider growth strategy for the sector is a practical way of driving growth through ensuring promotion of the sector both domestically and globally”.

While Jo Dipple, boss of UK Music, which is backing the scheme, added: “[The government’s] figures show how valuable the creative industries are to the British economy. UK Music’s research published at the end of 2013 established that British music contributed upwards of £3.5bn of GVA [gross value added] in 2012. It is clear that British creativity defines us as a nation both culturally and economically. The launch of this new website will act as an invaluable resource for those wanting more information on British creativity and for those wanting to do business in the UK”.
