Global’s bid to trademark Radio X opposed
By Chris Cooke | Published on Tuesday 24 November 2015
Radio Today has noted that Global Radio’s application to trademark its new brand Radio X – the new name for Xfm, of course – has been opposed.
The radio giant applied to trademark the name back in August as it prepared for the high profile and slightly controversial relaunch of Xfm, with its line-up of big name DJs in daytime. The broadcaster is seeking to secure a trademark in both the name and the station’s logo, and wants exclusive use of the mark in the audio, radio broadcasting, radio advertising and entertainment services domain.
Existing trademark owners can oppose new applications where they think that an applicant’s new name or logo – while not identical to their mark – is similar enough to cause confusion. The Intellectual Property Office, which oversees the trademark application procedure, does not say who has opposed Global’s Radio X application, but Radio Today reckons it maybe the company behind Exeter-based station Radio EXE.
It has held the UK trademark in its name in the radio broadcasting category since 2011, rebranding from Exeter FM to Radio EXE the following year. And ever since Radio X was first unveiled by Global back in the summer, some in the radio community have been musing as to what the independently owned Exe Broadcasting Ltd made of the development.
It remains to be seen what steps Global takes next.
