Guru dies

By | Published on Tuesday 20 April 2010

According to a statement from his most recent collaborator Solar, rapper Guru, best known as one half of Gang Starr, has died. He underwent surgery last month, having slipped into a coma after suffering from a heart attack; though the most recent report before this one said the rap man was conscious again and on the mend. It seems, however, that Guru was very ill after battling cancer for a year.

Solar said this morning that Guru died yesterday. His statement reads: “The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip hop icons of all time – my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru. Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius”.

A statement from Guru shortly after his operation said that Solar was to be considered his official spokesman on his health, after family members of the rapper said they had been denied access to him.
