Hallelujah and all that
By CMU Editorial | Published on Wednesday 10 December 2008
Fans of the late Jeff Buckley are hoping his haunting cover version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ can beat the planned ‘X Factor’ cover of the track that could be Christmas number one. It won’t, of course, but it’s a nice idea.
Whoever wins the telly talent show this weekend is expected to release a cover of the track in time for the Christmas chart. But fans of the popular Buckley version of the song are calling on people to buy his version instead – which is available via most download stores. His version is already at 43 in the chart thanks to the song’s exposure via ‘X Factor’.
Apparently fans of the Buckley song (I think it’s them anyway) have also set up a Facebook group calling on the public to boycott the ‘X Factor’ version of the song, which they presumably fear will be a cheesy reworking of a track which became really rather moving in Buckley’s hands (though personally I’ve always preferred the John Cale version).
