HMV Digital drops subscription service
By CMU Editorial | Published on Friday 2 November 2007
Just in time for that new chart based on subscription-based download services, which we reported on yesterday, HMV have announced they are, erm, closing down their subscription-based download service.
The high street retailer will relaunch its digital offering very soon in a bid to make it slightly less rubbish. The company yesterday confirmed the HMV Unlimited subscription service will go as part of the revamp, and that current subscribers, both of them probably, have been told about the imminent closure. The new look HMV download service will be integrated into the retailer’s mail order website, which is [a] more like Amazon’s recently launched digital offering and [b] flippin obviously the only way for HMV to compete in the download space.
As previously reported, Virgin Digital, Virgin Megastore’s download service launched around about the same time as HMV Digital, was completely closed down shortly after the Virgin Group announced it was selling the Megastore back in September. It is still unclear if the all new Virgin Megastore – Zavvi – will be offering a download service.
