James Bourne’s Loserville returns to the London stage this month

Loserville

It’s always bothered me that we never managed to organise our planned office trip to see James Bourne’s ‘Loserville’ musical before it closed on London’s West End in 2012 two months ahead of schedule. Well, ‘always’ is probably a bit strong a word. As is ‘bothered’. But that was a thing we talked about doing at the time.

Anyway, it’s back on the cards now, because the Union Theatre in Southwark is reviving the show later this very month. A new production directed by Michael Burgen will open on 25 Feb and run until 21 Mar, which seems achievable even if it flops again.

Sorry, I should probably explain some background here. James Bourne is a former member of the punk band Busted. He is now a member of the punk band McBusted. In between he was a member of the punk band Son Of Dork, who released an album called ‘Welcome To Loserville’.

‘Loserville’, as you may have guessed, is based on ‘Welcome To Loserville’, and received its world premiere in Bracknell way back in 2009 before eventually making its ill-fated way to London’s Garrick Theatre in 2012.

Set in 1971, the show tells the story of “computer geek” Michael Dork who has invented “something that could change the world” but is distracted by his love for a girl called Holly. Holly wants to be the first woman in space but is distracted by Michael’s attempts to woo her. They sing songs about it.

Tickets are on sale for the Union Theatre production. Here’s where you’ll find further details on how to purchase them.
