Mumford & Sons have announced a new mini-album, ‘Johannesburg’, recorded with Baaba Maal, Beatenberg and The Very Best in the South African city from which it takes its name. The songs were recorded in February during a tour of the country.

“We first met The Very Best in 2010 on the Laneway tour of Australia”, says the band’s Winston Marshall. “We weren’t just mind-blown by their music but [also] by their ability to get absolutely smashed beyond belief, every night, and yet still make the plane to the next show every morning. It is a great pleasure – and an eye-opener into human endurance – to be out with them again and it was an equally great pleasure to work with Johan Hugo from the band”.

Marcus Mumford adds: “The whole thing came together because of Johan really – and actually they had acted like sonic trailblazers in a lot of ways – marrying afrobeat rhythms, [The Very Best singer] Esau and Baaba’s voices and languages, over Western songwriting”.

All four acts teamed up to write and record the songs, which will be released on 17 Jun. Watch a trailer for the release here:
