Live Review: Neil Cowley Trio at London Jazz Festival on 17 Nov
By CMU Editorial | Published on Thursday 18 November 2010
This trio has a lot of character and a dedicated following, a combination that meant they were greeted with whoops and cheers the moment they entered the all-standing venue, and backchat with and wild appreciation from the crowd continued throughout the night, especially when Cowley announced seven inch vinyl copies of the song they performed on ‘Later With Jools Holland’ a couple of years ago, ‘His Nibs’, were available after the show.
The music flip-flopped between sweet, impassioned passages from a lone piano and raging three-way musical eruptions that involved repeating a riff with incredible speed and intensity until it seemed almost too much for them to bear, so that the shimmering wall of sound they’d created would gracefully collapse as the tune closed out.
Pianist Neil Cowley and drummer Evan Jenkins were clearly having a brilliant time and their enthusiasm was infectious, forcing the crowd to jump on their cathartic rollercoaster. For those on the buzz, the ride was immense.
