New music business school launches

Music business veteran Steve Melhuish has announced he is launching a new fast-track music business education programme to be based in London. The programme will include twelve intense full-day training seminars providing practical advice and information on music business issues.

The twelve-week course will include a lot of the more business-orientated content to be found in a conventional commercial music degree course, a number of which Melhuish has helped develop over the last ten years. However, the teaching will be much more focused, and specifically aimed at those looking to enter the music business, or those already working in one area of the sector looking to enhance their knowledge of the wider industry.

While Melhuish himself will lead the teaching, each week a guest speaker from the industry will offer their own insights, including PPL’s Keith Harris, Music Managers Forum CEO Jon Webster, record industry veterans Dave Robinson and Saul Galpern, Brixton Academy founder Simon Parks, Absolute Distribution’s Henry Semmene and CMU Publisher and Business Editor Chris Cooke.

Confirming his support for the new programme, Harris told CMU: “Steve worked with me at the University of Westminster teaching on various parts of the course. I am sure that his new offering is something that the industry needs in order to increase the range of knowledge and the professionalism needed to operate in the new music business environment”.

Melhuish himself added: “There are lots of people out there who need to know these skills, but don’t have the time to enrol on a three year BA course in Commercial Music. The Music Business Fast Track course distils the most important learning required, offering something more instant and therefore appealing where time is at a premium. There are other short courses around too, but none of them offer the full spectrum of teaching that we are providing, none of them have the kind of guest speakers we have, and none of them can boast such a great location”.

The full twelve week course will cost £1295, while people can attend individual sessions for £150 per day. More info at www.musicbusinessschool.co.uk.
