Single Review: Of Montreal – Of Our Elegant Caste (Polyvinyl)

Of Montreal

Hearing Of Montreal’s effervescent, exhilarating sound, the unwary listener might be surprised to discover that the band are on their ninth album. ‘Of Our Elegant Caste’ is the third single from last year’s ‘Skeletal Lamping’ album. This was the follow up to their break through album ‘Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?’ On the latter record flamboyant front man Kevin Barnes introduced his alter ego, “a black she-male” called Georgie Fruit, to catalogue the emotional fall-out from a separation with his wife. This character continues to play a starring role on the latest record. On the single Barnes sings in his distinctive falsetto, “Georgie said romantic love is flat”. Of Montreal’s psychedelic disco sound is strange and unusual, as well as persuasively funky and not a little cheeky. The lyrics continue with; “We can do it soft core if you want, but you should know I go both ways”. JW
