Portishead’s Adrian Utley releasing live LP feat nineteen guitarists

Portishead man Adrian Utley and his 24-strong Guitar Orchestra (in reality nineteen guitarists, four organists and a clarinet player) are to release a new LP interpreting American composer Terry Riley’s minimalist bible circa 1964, ‘In C’.

Says Utley: “I’ve been exploring the sonic possibilities of massed guitars for a while now in various contexts from pure noise to the sacred choral music of Arvo Part. So it was interesting to see what would happen if we had 20 electric guitars plus organs playing ‘In C’. It is an amazing piece of writing and original thought. A new free idea of organised group playing. The beginnings of what we know as minimalism”.

Utley et al’s reprisal, due 30 Sep via Geoff Barrow’s Invada Records, was taped live at St Georges in Bristol back in February. They’ll also play a series of still-TBA live dates later this year.
