Single Review: Pumajaw – Spangler (Fire)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 8 December 2008
‘Spangler’ is a piece of whiney baroque-pop mixed with folk that leaves me colder than a streaker in Tromso (the “gateway to the Artic” – it’s cold there). It is well orchestrated and made by people with musical talent, yet remains to be nondescript. The duet consists of quiet medieval moans sung over plucked guitars and has some cursory nods to psychedelic drone noises almost apologetically at the end. I don’t think I will be giving this repeated listens. B-side Christmas song ‘The Holly King’ is a big festive folk cliché complete with an ‘is that a folkin’ reindeer coming’ sound. It has some nice John Cale-style drone violin or viola (I can’t tell). Mildly irritating and it takes itself ridiculously seriously. PG
