Sainsbury’s crowns itself King Of Vinyl, HMV thinks it’s still top dog

Hey, here’s a true story. A friend of mine bought a copy of ‘Led Zeppelin II’ on lovely vinyl from Sainsbury’s recently, and had to return it twice because it was scratched. Anyway, since it began selling proper records in its stores again in March, Sainsbury’s now reckons it is the UK’s biggest seller of vinyl, with 8% market share.

The claim, reports City AM, came as part of the supermarket chain’s financial report for the last quarter. Despite this, vinyl failed to offset the drop in like-for-like sales the retailer experienced in the last three months. Bloody vinyl revival.

Elsewhere in vinyl market share bragging, HMV is continuing to position itself as the King Of Vinyl, and has announced the launch of Vinyl Week later this month. From 13-19 Jun, the high street chain will sell limited edition vinyl versions of albums from the likes of Alex Turner, The Sex Pistols, The Velvet Underground and more.
