Shirley Collins to release first album for 38 years
By Andy Malt | Published on Friday 16 September 2016
Following on from the release of a tribute album in her honour last year, folk musician Shirley Collins has returned to the studio herself to record her first LP for 38 years. Released on 4 Nov through Domino, ‘Lodestar’ is a collection of songs dating from the 1950s all the way back to the sixteenth century.
Discussing first single ‘Cruel Lincoln’, Collins says: “This is an ancient ballad, found only rarely in England. The theory is that Cruel Lincoln was a mason who was not paid for the work he did for ‘the Lord of the Manor’ and so extracted a terrible revenge”.
Sleeve notes for the new record have been written by the comedian Stewart Lee, who contributed a track to that aforementioned tribute album. He says of Collins: “Shirley is a time traveller, a conduit for essential human aches, one of the greatest artists who ever lived, and yet utterly humble”.
