Speech Debelle talks new album
By CMU Editorial | Published on Friday 11 November 2011
Speech Debelle, who was, of course, the Mercury Music Prize’s wildcard winner in 2009, is poised to release a successor to her debut album, ‘Speech Therapy’. Staying with the ‘speech’ quips, the twelve track ‘Freedom Of Speech’ will emerge via Ninja Tune’s Big Dada imprint at some point during February of next year. Yes, you’re right, that is a little surprising considering the comments she made about the label following her Mercury win. Clearly they managed to patch up their differences. Which is nice.
Debelle characterises her sophomore suite, which was made in close collaboration with the aforementioned fresh Warp Records signing Kwes, as being “all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to Kwes the producer”.
She describes the recording process: “For the writing stage of the album he would take out his laptop and midi-USB keyboard and that would be it. We’d start working and I couldn’t believe what we could do with so little equipment”.
The video for lead single, ‘Studio Backpack Rap’, can be watched below. And you can snag a free download of the track here.
