Three Doors Down bassist Todd Harrell has been charged with ‘vehicular homocide’ after allegedly causing the death of another driver in a road accident last Friday.

According to police, Harrell clipped a pick-up truck as he was speeding down Interstate 40 outside Nashville, Texas. The driver of the truck, named as Paul Shoulders Jr, subsequently lost control and swerved down an embankment, where his vehicle overturned and, not wearing a seatbelt, he was thrown out. He later died in hospital.

Harrell “acknowledged consuming hard cider” before driving, said police, as well as consuming prescription drugs, Lortab and Xanax. After being arrested, he was later discovered to have smuggled Xanax, Oxycodone and Oxymorphone tablets into his cell in a sock and was also charged over that.

Currently in jail will bail set at $100,000, Harrell is due to appear in court on Thursday. According to reports, he was also arrested following another drink driving accident last year.

In a statement, Three Doors Down did not reference Harrell or his arrest directly, but said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Howard Shoulders Jr. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time”.
