Tony Wilson tribute track launches today
By Chris Cooke | Published on Friday 14 August 2015
So, this being new music Friday, use this Friday to check out this new music, if you haven’t already, it having been doing the rounds for most of the week.
Skinny Dog Records today release a special track called ‘St Anthony: An Ode To Anthony H Wilson’ in memory of the late great music industry legend Tony Wilson, who died eight years ago this month. It sees a piece written by Mancunian poet Mike Garry set to music by composer Joe Duddell, while the accompanying video sees many former friends and colleagues of Wilson lip-sync the words.
Wilson was probably best known for his legendary label Factory Records and the music convention In The City, or maybe the Hacienda, or for his role in elevating the Manchester music scene and some of its key artists. Though he was also involved in a plethora of other projects, and had a second career in local news in the North West, a varied life that explains the eclectic mix of people participating in the tribute video.
The new song is raising money for Manchester’s Christie Cancer Hospital, which treated Wilson before his death, and will be officially launched at an event at the old Granada Studios in Manchester tonight, where a live rendition of the track will be performed.
