EMMY THE GREAT
Emma-Lee Moss, better known by her stage name, Emmy The Great, was born in Hong Kong but emigrated to London with her family when she was a child. But that was a few years ago now. More recently, she has spent her time releasing a string of singles that have got more than a few people very excited. And with her debut album, 'First Love', released via Close Harbour on 9 Feb, that excitement is reaching boiling point. Emmy begins a tour of the UK this Saturday, which will keep her busy, almost without a break, until the end of February. But before that, she took some time to answer our Same Six Questions.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
It's a long story but basically I ended up at Fuji Rock just after my A-levels and while I was on the run from the guy who took me there (who was really nice I was just a shit-witch when I was 18) met a band called The Get Up Kids. At the end of the festival they told me and my friend to start a band so that we could meet again next year. That's how I got into music.

Q2 What inspired your latest album?
My vagina wrote the whole thing while I was sleeping.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
We rehearse the song to get a vague idea of arrangements, then we record the guitar vocal and drums live then stick stuff over the top. Usually the vocal gets re-recorded again. There's no absolute formula but usually that's how it ends up. Sometimes I beg Euan to do the guitar for me so I can play more Nintendo.

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
While we were recording we listened exclusively to The Ronettes and Grandaddy, and for songwriting I'm influenced more by writers like TS Eliot and Ann Sexton. I'm really unsure of myself when I'm writing music and I find that if I look to other bands for inspiration I get intimidated. Not that TS Eliot shouldn't intimidate anyone more than say the Mountain Goats but I'm kind of better at feeling my way around words without freaking out than music.

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
Tape it onto cassette and listen to it that way.

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
Somewhere between a three and a seven.

GAVIN RUSSOM
Part of the excellent DFA-signed Delia And Gavin, here's the Gavin part going solo and making musical leaps and bounds, particularly on his 8 minute plus cover of Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl', which seems to have hit ubiquity as the song to cover, a la Britney Spears' 'Baby One More Time' in the late '90s. Obviously longer and more dub influenced than the original, it loses the saccharine, Sapphic suggestiveness as Russom simply states the lines in place of the provocative posturing of Perry's delivery. Plus, brilliant though the cover is, there are three other electronic wonders on offer on his MySpace page, which is criminally under-visited and thus handily linked below.

OINK UPLOADERS SENTENCED TO COMMUNITY SERVICE
Remember OiNK, the UK-based BitTorrent tracker which offered links to all sorts of illegal content and which was closed down by the authorities in October 2007? Well, four of the most prominent uploaders of illegal content to the service have been sentenced for the various copyright infringement crimes they committed.

The four uploaders in question pleaded guilty last December to making music available via the OiNK community without the permission of the content owners. Sentenced at Teesside Crown Court, uploader one Steven Diprose got 180 hours community service and was ordered to pay £378 court costs. Uploader two Michael Myers was ordered to pay a £500 fine. Uploader three got 100 hours community service and £378 costs. Uploader four James Garner got 50 hours community service and £378 costs.

There seems to be mixed opinions to the sentences among the BitTorrent community. Some reckon the judge too readily accepted the record industry's case for the four uploader's actions causing them commercial damage. Others, though, reckon the OiNK boys all got off quite lightly, and that the sentences won't provide that big a deterrent to those who continue to illegally share music via Torrent trackers and other web services. That said, sources say that only strong legal representation and a plethora of good references from respectable citizens helped the defendents avoid custodial sentences, which were considered by the court.

TorrentFreak quote a source close to one of the convicted infringers thus: "[The Judge] swallowed the prosecution line completely that initial seeders were causing major damage to the copyright holders, and particularly uploaders who uploaded before the official release date. The fact that all the early uploads were only one or two days early and that three out four of the uploaders bought their CDs online did not sway him. All the retailers, quite naturally, denied this".

The cases against a fifth uploader to the OiNK community, plus the guy behind the service, Alan Ellis, are ongoing and will return to court in March.

BUSINESS AS USUAL AT 2ENTERTAIN DESPITE CO-OWNER ADMINISTRATION
The Woolworths Group, the parent company of the now defunct Woolies retail chain and music distributor eUK, went into administration yesterday, with Deloitte brought in to wind everything up.

With most of the Woolworths empire already dismantled that's only really news in relation to 2Entertain, the DVD and music company jointly owned by the Woolworths Group and the BBC's commercial division BBC Worldwide. 2Entertain is a video publisher, and also owns a production company and the Demon Music Group, one of the UK's biggest independent record companies.

2Entertain has so far managed to generally avoid being affected by the chaos caused by the liquidation of its co-owner and sister firms, and the management there yesterday insisted that while the Woolworths Group was in administration it remained a going concern. BBC Worldwide is in talks with the Woolies administrator regarding the sale of the former retailer's 40% stake.

A spokesman for the Beeb said yesterday: "BBC Worldwide would like to make it clear that that 2Entertain is not in administration. 2Entertain remains a profitable and well funded business and BBC Worldwide remains in talks with the administrator of Woolworths Group plc regarding the sale of the company's 40% stake in the joint venture".

EDDY BIGS UP SNOWSIDE - NEW ACTS ADDED TO LINE UP
Xfm's Eddy Temple Morris has been talking to CMU about Snowside, the brand new Alpine music festival that will take over Nassfield in Austria from 23-29 Mar with an unrivalled programme of gigs, clubs, parties and snow-type activities.

The festival is being co-programmed by Eddy and his Remix team and the guys behind the Secret Garden summer festival, and Metronomy, Shy Child and Vitalic have just been added to a line up that already boasts live sets from Infadels, Kissy Sell Out, Evil 9, A.Human, The Japanese Popstars, Slagsmalsklubben, Man Like Me and Eddy's own outfit The Losers, plus DJ sets from the likes of James Priestly, DJ Fresh, TC, CTRL Z, Kris Menace, South Central, Qemists, Japanese Popsters, Brookes Brothers, Matrix and Futurebound, Rhysmix, Breakfastaz and Stereo:Type.

Writing in CMU's sister bulletin the Remix Update, Eddy says: "I am just beside myself with excitement over Snowside festival. I cannot stress how much fun this is going to be, with Secret Graden hooking up with the Remix and all those legends coming out to get drunk and fall over in the snow".

He continues: "This is a very 'boutique' experience, exclusive and lovely. It will be a unique opportunity to hang out and spend quality time with some really cool and talented people. The combination of altitude and hot-wine-beverages make for very happy times, and we'll all be in there together, day and night, drinking, boarding, smoking and joking".

There'll be more updates on Snowside in both the Daily and the Remix Update in the coming weeks - meantime full info and ticket info is available at www.snowside.co.uk.

TAKE THAT REVEAL DARKER SIDE OF FAME...
The members of Take That have frankly discussed fame the first time around in a new interview with Q Magazine.

The band's Howard Donald admitted that the band's 1996 break-up left him feeling suicidal. "I didn't want us to split... I was pissed off", he is quoted as saying. "I walked out the hotel and I wanted to throw myself into the Thames ... but I thought 'knowing me I'll end up in the middle of the river and the tide will go out and I'll be in the papers stuck in the Thames mud'".

Gary Barlow, meanwhile, coughed to having had encounters with fans. He told the magazine: "As soon as we went abroad we wiped our memories of what we were allowed to do. In Amsterdam I slept with a fan. A chubby Dutch girl. And carried on from there. We just had a lot of fun. I don't feel any guilt about how much sex I had".

Mark Owen also admitted that he "did all right" with the groupies, but regretted it, having been in a relationship at the time.

ZAPPA WIDOW LOSES CASE AGAINST ZAPPA-FEST
The widow of the late great Frank Zappa has failed to stop a German festival using her husband's name and image. As previously reported, Gail Zappa and her family trust sued the owners of a German Frank Zappa fan club over their annual Zappanale Festival, demanding that they stop using the family's name and remove a bronze sculpture of the avant-garde musician from the town where the fest takes place. They also sued for 250,000 euros in damages.

But a court in Dusseldorf has thrown out Zappa's case, ruling that organisers of Zappanale can continue to use that name, plus the late musician's image in its branding and on its merchandise, because doing so, the judge said, did not violate any of Gail Zappa's rights. The widow's case was seemingly weakened because she could not prove she used Zappa's name and image herself in Germany, and also because she had known about the event since its launch in 1990 (three years before her husband's death) and had only chosen to take action in 2008.

Thomas Dippel, who runs the fan club who promote the festival, told reporters: "We have always been certain that we have the older rights. We have also patented the name of the festival with the German patent office. Gail Zappa only applied for the patent of her own rights in 2002".

The ruling means the 2009 Zappanale festival can go ahead from 12-16 Aug as planned.

THRILLER VIDEO DIRECTOR SUES OVER ROYALTIES
Michael Jackson has reportedly signed up to participate (in a production rather than performing capacity, I think) in a Broadway musical version of 'Thriller', which will transform the legendary fourteen minute video for the title track of Jacko's sixth album into a full stage show. I think this project has nothing to do with the 'Thriller Live' show that has just opened in London's West End to very mixed reviews, but don't quote me on that. The new show will, like the London musical, incorporate songs from Jackson's catalogue, though whereas the West End production includes Jackson Five songs too I think this new project will just take songs from 'Thriller' and 'Off The Wall'.

Anyway, this is all relevant to the pop courts because the director of the original video, John Landis, has just sued the singer claiming he is owed royalties relating to the famous pop promo. Whether the news of the Broadway project prompted the lawsuit I'm not sure.

According to his contract with Jacko, Landis is due 50% of any revenues generated by the video or its accompanying documentary. He is also due regular revenue updates. He claims that he has heard nothing for four years. He is suing Jacko and his people for "fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct". It's thought Landis may be due up to $1 million in unpaid royalties.

MCCARTNEY AND RADIOHEAD ADDED TO GRAMMY LINE UP
The Grammys have announced that nominees Paul McCartney and Radiohead will both perform at the upcoming award ceremony, set to take place in LA next month. It's also been revealed that Justin Timberlake and TI will perform together, whilst TI will also get together with Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne for a special rendition of the single 'Swagga Like Us' (Jay-Z's track, but featuring the other three). They join previously announced performers such as Katy Perry, Jennifer Hudson and Coldplay.

As previously reported, Jay-Z is nominated in six categories, as is Kanye West, but it's Lil Wayne who leads the nominations with eight. McCartney, who will be supported in his performance by Dave Grohl on drums, is nominated twice. Radiohead have five nods.

GLADE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES NEW SITE
Organisers of the Glade festival have announced that they've found their new site, and it's one that will allow the event the freedom to play loud music long into the night - not the case at their previous home. The exact location will be revealed to ticket holders closer to the time, but organisers say that the site is close to Winchester and well served by public transport.

Nick Ladd, Glade's director, says this: "We are really happy with our new home, it's really tailor-made for us - beautiful countryside, an event friendly council and no neighbours, so we can enjoy dance music as mother nature intended - outdoors and loud!"

Details of this year's line up are expected to be announced in the next few weeks. Tickets for the dance event, which takes place from Thursday 16 Jul to Sunday 19 Jul, are on sale now priced at £125, but students can get them for £99 as long as they can prove their status. Rock Ness have announced that Orbital are to reform for an appearance at the Scottish festival this summer. Organisers say the duo are set to headline the event, which takes place from 12 - 14 Jun, alongside The Prodigy, Biffy Clyro, Dizzee Rascal and Basement Jaxx. Orbital's live set will coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the release of their debut single 'Chime'.

Jim King, the festival's director, says this: "Orbital are legends and they are a great addition to the RockNess Saturday night line up. Listening to tracks like 'Chime' and 'Belfast' in such a dramatic setting is going to be a highlight of the weekend".

ALBUM REVIEW: Ladyfinger (ne) - Dusk (Saddle Creek)
Nebraska was once referred to as the 'Desert State', a vast, arid landscape where anyone bold enough to venture in rarely returned. These comments were merely said in jest, yet it underlined a fundamental ignorance - bands do actually come out of Nebraska. With a world striding Bright Eyes to look up to, Ladyfinger bring their balls-to-the-floor rawk to the stage on the renowned Saddle Creek label. If nothing else, you've got to admire their timing. The world is salivating for some distortion right now, what with a cripplingly bad 'Chinese Democracy' from the car-crash dramatic Axl Rose. So with that in mind the guitars are torn up to 11, the drummer is brandishing baseball bats (maybe), and the vocals are entrenched in epic reverb. Yet the beauty of the album is that its originality lies in its curious ability to sit on the fence. It's hardcore enough to satisfy those that make devil horns with their hands at any given opportunity, but with a soft centre that will appeal to the romantics among us: a musical Buballoo. Their best showcase is 'ADD', which broods in a dark and dissonant soundscape in the verse before launching an adrenaline fuelled and life affirming chorus, like early Queen Of The Stone Age with a bone to pick. After half an album your attention does lag, and once that's done Ladyfinger (ne) lack the spark to wake you from the daydream. Yet this is a promising sophomore effort, with a refreshing ability to fight its way out of any pidgeonhole. GB

PRODUCER MANAGERS SAY MORE COLLABORATION NEEDED TO PROTECT PRODUCERS' INTERESTS
Over sixty record producer managers from both the UK and US met in London last week for a session called 'Resurrecting The Music Producer', an event organised by the Music Manager Forum's Producer Managers Group and held at the London HQ of PRS For Music.

Explaining the background to the meeting, producer manager Stephen Budd, who led the meeting, told CMU: "Although the role of the record producer is still essential in the quality record making process, times are tough indeed as producers face drastically reduced budgets and minimal or no earnings at all from royalties, meaning many are struggling to survive. On top of this, producers are being continually pressurised into working 'on spec' and there are many examples of them being played off against each other in an unfair manner by unscrupulous executives. If the industry wants quality recordings, there is a need for the representatives of producers to work closely together to look at how deals and budgets can be restructured to allow recording process to continue to employ producers in a viable manner. The MMF recognise the essential role of the producer and have re-constituted the PMG to aid this process. I'm delighted by the support we have received".

In addition to the producer managers in attendance, other music industry sectors were represented at the debate. Producers themselves, obviously, led by the boss of the Music Producers Guild Mike Howlett, plus Feargal Sharkey from cross-sector trade body UK Music, Jazz Summers and Dennis Muirhead from the artist management side of the MMF, the British Academy Of Composers and Songwriter's Patrick Rackow and Maureen Droney Executive Director of the US's Recording Academy.

Commenting on the event, Howlett adds: "This meeting was an important opportunity to discuss the pressing issues facing record producers in the current recording industry - how do we get paid when records are becoming increasingly regarded as a loss-leader for live promotion, and often there is no major label involvement to provide reliable royalty tracking? In times like these it is even more necessary for people in the recording industry with common aims to work together to strengthen our voice. Clear ideas have come from this meeting that are leading to future collaboration".

Following last week's meeting, subject-specific sessions are now planned, some run in conjunction with the MPG. A wiki website will also be set up so producer managers can share information.

WIN REAPPOINT WENHAM TO TOP JOB
Elsewhere in trade body news, the globally focused body for the indie label sector, the World Independent Network, has confirmed that Alison Wenham, boss of the UK's Association Of Independent Music, will continue to head up the worldwide indie body too. She was re-elected into the top job at a meeting at MIDEM, though her job title will change from President to Chairman because of plans to appoint a titular President to act as a spokesperson for the body.

Four Vice-chairman were also appointed at the meeting in recognition of the widening of WIN's activities, and the need for representation in different regions. The Vice-chairs will be David Vodicka from the Australian Independent Records association, Mark Chung from German independents body VUT, Portia Sabin representing the American Association Of Independent Music and Duncan McKie from the Canadian Independent Record Production Association.

FAC TO MEET NEXT WEEK
And yet more trade body news, because the Featured Artist Coalition is expected to meet next Monday evening, and Music Week reckons members of Pink Floyd, Coldplay and The Feeling may be among those featured artists to attend.

As previously reported, the FAC was officially launched at In The City last year. Although spearheaded by the Music Managers Forum, it is an independent body that will exist to represent so called featured artists, they being the artists whose names appear on the front of albums - ie the musicians and singers you all know the names of, rather then session musicians whose names only appear in the small print. Although in theory those artists could join the Musician's Union, some reckon a separate body is needed to specifically represent their interests.

Blur's Dave Rowntree, Radiohead's Ed O'Brien, Soul II Soul's Jazzie B, Master Shortie and Kate Nash have been leading the proceedings since the body's launch, and they are expected to report back to the Coalition's membership next week, on both their recent meeting with Culture Minister Andy Burnham, and on their proposals for how the organisation will work moving forward.

Over 700 artists have already signed up to the Coalition, including Annie Lennox, Klaxons, Robbie Williams, Jools Holland and Kaiser Chiefs.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LAUNCH RECORD LABEL
The National Geographic Society has launched a record label, apparently, which sounds interesting. Nat Geo Music plans to release and promote modern music from around the globe, which sounds a bit like 'world music' to me, though they're not saying so, possibly because that's a bit of a nonsense term that often comes with an unjustified stigma attached to it.

The new label follows a recent deal between the Society and music publishing administrators Kobalt, who will administrate the publishing rights in 16,000 bits of music owned by National Geographic, presumably mainly originating from their TV programmes.

SONY MUSIC APPOINT NEW CLASSICAL CHIEF
Sony Music have announced the appointment of former Decca MD Bogdan Roscic as President of Sony Music Classical, a new role which will oversee all of the major's classical music divisions.

He will report directly to Sony Music CEO Rolf Scmidt-Holtz, who said this: "Classical music not only remains a vital part of our company's DNA but also this is a business we are determined to grow and promote again. While genres like classical remain under tremendous pressure in the marketplace, we believe it has enduring appeal with consumers and we plan to harness it with a renewed commitment to strong leadership, a rich catalogue and a world-class roster".

SMITHS SAY ALL OK DESPITE SALES DECLINE
I know someone who's running a book on how long it will be until WH Smiths goes into administration, given all the high street doom and gloom, though presumably their network of railway station stores help prop things up. And the boss of the books and mags and CDs and stationery seller insisted everything was going OK yesterday, despite a drop in like for like sales of 5% over the Christmas period compared to the previous year.

CEO Kate Swann told reporters: "As anticipated, trading conditions on the high street were challenging over the Christmas period. However, we continue to successfully deliver our strategy and maintain operational flexibility, increasing gross margins and accelerating our cost reduction plans. Looking ahead, we expect consumer spending in our markets to remain subdued and we have planned accordingly".

So there you go. Do people still count Smiths as record sellers? The last one I went in seemed to be selling about 14 CDs. Oh well, I guess we should continue to report on them anyhow. Just for old time's sake.

BEBO NOT FOR SALE, OK?
Bebo is not for sale, and I wish you would stop saying they are. Actually, I don't care. Say what you like. But a spokesman for the social networking platform has denied rumours that owners AOL are looking into selling the website, which cost them $850 million when they bought it less than a year ago, for a mere $200 million. TechCrunch says AOL execs are disappointed with the performance of the site, and are struggling to integrate it with their other web services.

But a Bebo spokesperson says this: "The whole thing is ridiculous and there is no truth in it at all". Asked about plans to better integrate Bebo with other AOL assets, the spokesperson added: "Social Inbox was launched in December and is just the first step in answering that fragmentation problem with Twitter, Flickr, AOL Mail and a recommendation tool. It was the first step and there's more to come - there's a lot of stuff to be layered over to build on that".

RADIO 2 CHIEF APPOINTED
Former Radio 5 chief Bob Shennan has been appointed as the new boss of Radio 2 and 6Music, taking over from Lesley Douglas who, of course, had to quit over all that Ross/Brand I fucked your grandaughter stuff. The appointment will see Shennan return to the Beeb after a year away from the Corporation - he spent some of that time helping develop Channel 4's fantastic network of no radio stations.

In his new role running the nation's biggest radio station and its digital serious-music sister channel, Shennan will report to the BBC's Director Of Audio & Music Tim Davie, who said of the appointment: "Bob is an outstanding leader with extensive radio experience and a proven track record in station management. Bob's energy, enthusiasm and passion for Radio 2 will ensure that the station remains creative and vibrant".

Shennan himself added: "Radio 2 is the cornerstone of UK Radio. 6 Music is at the forefront of digital radio. It is a privilege to be asked to lead the extraordinary creative forces of both stations".

FUTURE PUBLISHING REVENUES UP
Metal Hammer and Classic Rock publisher Future have announced a 1% year-on-year rise in revenues for the last quarter, though admitted they were helped in part by the strong dollar. Advertising revenue across the board was up 1%, though online advertising went up 25%, which is good news for a company like Future that has to prepare for further slumps in ad revenues generated by print titles - print ad revenues for the quarter were down 4%. The company's events and licensing business saw revenues go up 8%.

Despite the increases, CEO Stevie Spring was cautious, warning investors she was guiding the business through "uncharted waters" and that the company was not "immune" to challenges from the downturn. She said in a statement: "Our focus this year is on guiding our business effectively through the uncharted waters of the current macroeconomic environment and ensuring we remain on course to deliver sustainable growth in the mid-term. While of course we're not immune to current challenges, we're mitigating these through the active management of our portfolio and through building in greater cost flexibility. We remain confident that we're in the best shape we can be to deal with whatever challenges lie ahead and are on track to deliver against expectations for the full year".

HALLIWELL ENGAGED AFTER WHIRLWIND ROMANCE
According to reports, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell recently got engaged to an Italian yacht tycoon, Fabrizio Politi, just weeks after meeting him.

The former pop star's management agency 19 apparently said in a statement: "We are delighted to announce the engagement of Geri Halliwell and Fabrizio Politi. As a token of their commitment to each other Fabrizio presented Geri with an engagement ring over the festive season. There are no immediate plans for marriage as the couple are enjoying their engagement".

The pair met in a nightclub in Florence early in December, and reports suggest that the 'token' was a diamond ring worth more than £200k.

NOEL GALLAGHER SAYS HIS GUITAR PLAYING IS AVERAGE
Noel Gallagher has said that he's only an average guitarist, and Paul Weller agrees. In an interview with Total Guitar magazine Gallagher said of his guitar playing: "It facilitates what I do in Oasis, know what I mean? I'm unfortunate enough that two of my best mates are Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Paul Weller. Those two are virtuosos to me, although neither of them would admit it. On the electric guitar they're it. So if you're asking me how do I compare to those two - and I like to compare myself to the greats - I'm average at fucking best".

Weller responded by saying "Bless him, but his playing is rudimentary. But Noel doesn't pretend to be a guitar god. He's very good at putting chords together and he's got a distinctive style in terms of his chord sequences and his rhythm playing. It's recognisable, I suppose".

FIDDY, ET AL, VERBALLY ATTACKED IN RICK ROSS TRACK
US rapper Rick Ross has dissed 50 Cent in his new record 'Mafia Music', and also names other celebrities such as Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston. In the track, described by Ross as a "scathing four-and-a-half-minute non stop flow", the lyrics reference the previously reported house fire at the property owned by Fiddy and inhabited by his ex, saying: "I love to pay ya bills, can't wait to pay ya rent, Curtis Jackson baby mama, I ain't looking for a cent, burn the house down. You gotta buy another, don't forget the gas can, jealous, stupid motherfucker".

Ross is quoted as saying: "I had to address a few people. I love it. The thing is, some people are gonna be - um - they're gonna be fucked up. That's the best way I can put it".

Send news stories to [email protected]. If we don't respond directly, we do apologise, only we get sent hundreds of emails a day and don't have time to respond to every one of them. However we do check every email sent to the musicnews email address, and do pull out stories that we feel are relevant to our readers.

Send CDs for review to CMU, UnLimited Media, 221-222 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6PJ.
