Stream-ripping, Pirate Bay and even vKontakte appear in US government's annual piracy report
The American government has published its annual Notorious Markets List, which puts the spotlight on the companies and websites accused of facilitating rampant copyright infringement.

Put together by the office of the United States Trade Representative, this annual document has the stated aim of helping governments around the world "prioritise intellectual property rights enforcement efforts that protect American businesses and their workers".

The US record industry is among those who contribute to the USTO's big piracy list. In its most recent submission, the Recording Industry Association Of America focused on stream-ripping, which has reached the top of the music industry's piracy gripe list of late, and internet companies like Cloudflare which - although entirely legitimate - do provide services to copyright infringing clients.

In its introduction, which reviews positive developments in the last twelve months, the USTO's report notes the closure of the biggest stream-ripping site of them all - YouTube-MP3 - as a result of legal action by the record industry. However, with plenty of other services for the stream rippers to choose from, this kind of piracy is still a problem, the report notes.

Critics of the music industry's bid to shut down sites like YouTube-MP3 argue that any stream ripping service has legitimate as well as copyright infringing uses. Which is true, though the music industry would argue that with a site like YouTube-MP3, the vast majority of uses are of the infringing variety, and the site's operator made no effort to discourage or filter out illegal ripping.

The USTO's report acknowledges this critique, but then provides the music industry's counter argument and picks out streaming ripping site Convert2mp3.net as a particular problem. States the report: "Though circumstances exist where stream ripping could be lawful, such as if the content were licensed for that purpose and the conversion were permitted under the legitimate service's terms of use, the operations of many unauthorised stream-ripping sites reportedly continue to contribute overwhelmingly to copyright infringement. One such example, Convert2mp3.net, appears in the list below".

Expanding further on the issues with Convert2MP3.net in the actual Notorious Markets List that forms the bulk of the report, the USTO says: "This site includes a search function that allows users to search for video titles of copyright-protected music videos [on YouTube without leaving the site]. Convert2MP3.net does not appear to have permission from YouTube or other sites and does not have permission from right holders for a wide variety of music represented by major US labels".

Though for fans of old fashioned online piracy, it's not all new-fangled stream-ripping. Some old favourites get a namecheck too.

"Despite enforcement actions around the world and drawn-out legal battles against its
operators", states the USTO document, "The Pirate Bay is of symbolic importance as one of the longest-running and most vocal torrent sites of admittedly illegal downloads of movies, television, music, and other copyrighted content".

For fans of illegally sharing copyright material over social networks, Russian social media firm vKontakte still features too. Despite it making friends with its former foes in the music industry, signing licensing deals with the majors, launching a legit streaming service and, in return, making commitments to crack down on the illegal distribution of music across its social network.

So why is vk.com still a 'notorious market'? Because the movie industry contributes to this report too. "Despite these positive signals, VK reportedly continues to be a hub of infringing activity and the US motion picture industry reports that they find thousands of infringing files on the site each month", the document states. "VK continues to be listed pending the institutionalisation of appropriate measures to promote respect on its platform for [intellectual property] of all right holders, not just those with whom it has contracts, which are comparable to those measures used by other social media sites".

Launching the latest Notorious Markets List, United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said yesterday: "Marketplaces worldwide that contribute to illicit trade cause severe harm to the American economy, innovation, and workers. The Trump Administration is committed to holding intellectual property right violators accountable and intensifying efforts to combat counterfeiting and piracy". That's right people, crack down on piracy and you'll make America great again.

Hospital Records cuts ties with Mistabishi over racist comments
Hospital Records has announced that it has stopped selling a number of early Mistabishi records it released, following racist comments made by the producer. The label has also said that it will donate any further income it receives from these releases to the Love Music Hate Racism charity.

Mistabishi, real name James Pullen, stirred controversy over the weekend, after posting a response to a news report that London Mayor Sadiq Khan had said that Donald Trump had cancelled a trip to the UK because he'd "got the message" that Londoners do not want him in the city.

"I'm a Londoner and would be THRILLED to have the US President visit this city", wrote the producer on his social network accounts. "Sadiq Khan isn't a real Londoner".

In a subsequent comment thread under the now deleted Facebook post (although the initial remark remains on Twitter), Pullen was quizzed on what he meant. He responded that Khan's family hadn't lived in England for long enough to be considered English, or for the Mayor himself to be a proper Londoner.

Pullen then made the bold claim that his family "can be traced back [in England] over a thousand years", while adding that Khan was just the child of "some cunt [who] wandered off a boat". This, he reckoned, makes him more of a Londoner than the mayor, and apparently therefore more entitled to an opinion about what the majority of Londoners believe. Which is the sort of logic you might expect from someone whose family haven't bothered checking out anywhere else in the world in over a millennia.

Hospital Records released the debut Mistabishi album 'Drop', and a number of Pullen's early singles and EPs under the name. They subsequently parted company, but the label continued to sell those releases. In a statement last night, it said that it was now cutting all ties with the producer, following his latest comments.

"At Hospital Records, Hospitalitydnb and Med School we do not tolerate racism of any kind", reads the statement. "Our ethos of equality and total inclusivity to all remains, as it always has. Racism, xenophobia and bigotry have no place in our community. We are proud to be part of a diverse and tolerant community in which every person is treated as an equal no matter where they are from, their race or heritage".

Turning directly to Pullen, the company continued: "In light of recent events we have chosen to remove Mistabishi's releases from our own store and direct any of Hospital Records' income received from his publishing and releases on all other stores to our chosen charity: Love Music Hate Racism".

Pullen subsequently issued a statement on his Facebook page, saying: "I shouldn't have to apologise for my concerns about spiralling crime rates and social disintegration in my own neighbourhood and city but I'll always apologise for causing offence".

He then adds: "People who think like me are just a secondary condition of a much bigger problem that no one seems to want to deal with, but obviously it's much easier to silence and contain that than the actual cause of it. I'll keep my opinions to myself and hope to find some sort of inner peace with it all and try to concentrate on the positive aspects of where I live. Another round of humanitarian work is probably the one".

Wilful Publicity announces promotions and new hire
Music PR agency Wilful Publicity has announced a new structure for its team as the company prepares to kick 2018 in the back of the knees.

Chris Dean is promoted to Head Of Press, David Sullivan becomes Senior Publicist, and Jenni Vodden moves up to Publicist. This leaves space for Tom Dimmock to join from Warner Music in Vodden's previous role of Junior Publicist.

Says Wilful MD, former EMI and Warner PR man William Luff: "In the four years since I launched Wilful Publicity, I have been excited and privileged to build a fantastic team of publicists who consistently go above and beyond in their commitment to our artists and clients".

"Our roster is one of the most varied and dynamic in music, encompassing artists from household names on major labels to brand new musicians working independently, across many different genres in the recorded and live music arenas", he continues.

"With the landscape of both the music press and music industry constantly evolving, the attendant needs of clients for meaningful profile across a wide range of online publications and the ever-more competitive world of print press is increasing exponentially. As we expand into 2018 this restructure ensures we're fully charged and prepared for the exciting year ahead".

Wilful clients include divisions of all three majors, Cooking Vinyl, Raw Power Management, and artists such as Iron Maiden, Corinne Bailey Rae, Prophets Of Rage and Conor Maynard.

BBC to host special Sound Of 2018 gig on Radio 1
Doing its bit to ensure that Sigrid is definitely the sound of January 2018, if not the sound of all of 2018, the BBC has booked her to play at a live broadcast from its Maida Vale Studios on 30 Jan.

The winner of the Beeb's Sound Of 2018 poll will play a show called, well, Sound Of 2018 Live. She will be joined by some other acts who appeared on the Sound Of 2018 long list - aka losers - specifically Pale Waves and Rex Orange County.

Also appearing during the special show, which will be recorded in front of one of those live studio audiences, will be Years & Years, who I am pretty sure were the Sound Of 2015 and who therefore have no business continuing to bother us all in 2018.

Says Annie Mac: "Sound Of 2018 Live is one of the first opportunities to see and hear some of the most exciting new artists in 2018. There is a performer on this line-up for everyone and I'm really looking forward to having them all perform at Maida Vale live on the show. Having the brilliant returning winners Years & Years on the line-up is an added bonus!"

Mac will host the show by the way. In case you thought she just barged in here with a random quote. As we've already established, it's only Years & Years who barge in where they're not wanted.

CMU Insights seminars return with three sessions on making money from copyright
The CMU Insights seminars kick off again next month with three sessions on music rights and the music rights sector.

Taking place at the London HQ of Lewis Silkin on Chancery Lane each Monday evening from 5 Feb, the CMU Insights seminars are fact-packed user-friendly training sessions ideal for both newcomers to and old hands in the music industry, explaining both the basics and the very latest trends and developments.

The three music rights sessions come together under the title 'Making Money From Music Copyright'. The first seminar is an introduction to how copyright works in general, the second looks at music licensing, including collective licensing, while the third reviews the music rights sector, including digital, physical and sync.

The seminars are led by CMU's Chris Cooke. He says: "Although music rights can get complex quite quickly, the basics are pretty straightforward, and knowing those basics is important for anyone creating, managing, exploiting or otherwise working with songs or recordings. These seminars run though all the basics in simple terms, before then explaining how the complexities come about once music rights are monetised".

Places on individual seminars are £49.99, while a place on all three copyright sessions is just £125. Info and tickets here.

Approved: Warmduscher
Newly signed to The Leaf Label, Warmduscher settle into their new home with new single 'Big Wilma'. The band features members of Fat White Family, Childhood and Paranoid London, and the new deal paves the way for the follow-up to their 2015 album, 'Khaki Tears'.

'Big Wilma' is a two minute flash of jittery, overdriven guitar, pumped forward by an insistent krautrock bassline. B-side 'Neon Tongues' takes a more considered approach, a dark, synth-led track beneath a monologue delivered by frontman Clams Baker.

As the band's mysterious biographer Dr Alan Goldfarb puts it: "Your favourite boogie band is back with a soft clump of hair gripped tight in their collective palm. BIG WILMA LIVES! Waking and wiping the cobwebs and sand from her face, she moves towards the door. Fuel for the fire. Kerosene. BRING MORE KEROSENE! Throw it all on. These books won't burn themselves".

"Wilma is love for the strong and blitzkrieg for the weak", he goes on. "She steps back to admire your clothes before striking. Remember the name. Remember the aroma. 'Big Wilma' is the new single by Warmduscher. An album will follow, as so often it does. The road to Whale City is long and moist. Lined with outstretched hands and forlorn looks. This is no silk road. No Route 66. You're no longer stuck on the M25".

So I think that should have answered all of your questions. Any more are probably dealt with in this video introduction to the band. You can also catch them live at The Windmill in Brixton on 1 Feb, as part of Independent Venue Week.

Listen to 'Big Wilma' here.

The Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan dies
The Cranberries' frontwoman Dolores O'Riordan has died. No cause of death has yet been given. She was 46.

According to a brief statement yesterday, the musician had been in London for a recording session and had died "suddenly" while in the city. Police are reportedly not treating the death as suspicious.

Her bandmates - Noel Hogan, Mike Hogan and Fergal Lawler - commented: "We are devastated on the passing of our friend Dolores. She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to have been part of her life from 1989 when we started The Cranberries. The world has lost a true artist today".

The Cranberries released their first album for five years, 'Something Else', in April last year, featuring acoustic and orchestral versions of songs from their back catalogue. But in June, the band cancelled tour dates in support of the record, due to ongoing back problems experienced by O'Riordan.

Last month, she told fans that she was "feeling good", and had done her "first bit of gigging in months" when she performed at the Billboard staff Christmas party.

O'Riordan was scheduled to record vocals on hard rock band Bad Wolves' version of Cranberries hit 'Zombie' yesterday. Paying tribute, the band's Tommy Vext said on Facebook: "We are shocked and saddened at the news of Dolores's passing, mere hours before she was to record vocals on our upcoming version of 'Zombie'. We have always had deep respect for her as an artist and a vocalist and she was never afraid to bare her soul in her music and lyrics".

He continued: "'Zombie' is an incredibly personal song and although we are a hard rock band, we always felt the rawness and honesty she projected on stage and in her recordings was something to which all bands should aspire to, regardless of genre. When we heard she liked our version and wanted to sing on it, it was the greatest compliment a new band, or any band for that matter, could have received".

The band's "hearts are broken that we were not able to see this collaboration through", he added. "We hope we can still make her proud by sharing our version of 'Zombie' with the world".

Originally released in 1994, 'Zombie' was The Cranberries' biggest hit. A sample from the song also appears on 'In Your Head', on Eminem's latest album 'Revival'.

She adds: "Bringing the film back for its 50th anniversary is great, both for those who loved it the first time around and for those new singing and dancing audiences who will be introduced to this classic music and animation".

Jessie Ware, Rag N Bone Man, Wolf Alice and more to play BRITs Week shows
The annual week-long BRIT Awards warm-up, BRITs Week, will return again next month, raising money for War Child. There will be various shows from nominees (and non-nominees) around London, plus one in Manchester to prove that the music industry isn't totally focussed on London.

"This year War Child turns 25 and has helped hundreds of thousands of children cope with the devastating effects of war", says War Child's Head of Music, Entertainment & Development, Liana Mellotte. "Since our first music fundraiser, it's amazing and very humbling for us to be working with some of the world's best music talent a quarter of a century later. It's testament to the musicians who generously donate their time and talent to stand up for the rights of children in the most horrendous circumstances".

Among this year's performers are Jessie Ware, Rag N Bone Man, Wolf Alice, The Vamps and Laura Marling.

Says BPI and BRITs boss Geoff Taylor: "BRITs Week is one of my favourite times of the year, when an eclectic mix of brilliantly talented artists come together in the exciting run up to the BRIT Awards to raise money and awareness for children whose lives are shattered by war, and at the same time celebrate the wonderful diversity of British music".

He goes on: "This year we have an amazing ten gigs on eight nights, when we as fans can enjoy intimate performances from outstanding artists, while being reminded of the incredible power of music to do good and to help change people's lives for the better. We are THRILLED to be supporting War Child on its 25th anniversary".

If you want to be in with a chance of attending any of the shows, you'll need to enter a prize draw and bung War Child a fiver. The opportunity to do that opens at 9am on Friday at www.britsweekwarchild.co.uk.

But when and where are the shows, and who the hell will be playing? Don't worry, I've got a list. Here it is:

12 Feb: Jessie Ware, Bush Hall
13 Feb: Rag N Bone Man, Islington Assembly Hall
15 Feb: Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Omeara
17 Feb: Laura Marling, St Hiles In The Field
20 Feb: Alt-J, The Garage
20 Feb: Wolf Alice, Gorilla (THAT'S IN MANCHESTER)
22 Feb: The Amazons, Omeara
22 Feb: The Vamps, Dingwalls

Glee actor tells Madam X she's not hip hop enough
British DJ Madam X had her set rudely interrupted last week during the cruise ship based American dance music festival Holy Ship when one festival-goer - an actor who apparently had a recurring role in 'Glee' - decided he wasn't digging her track selection and that the best solution was to cut the music for everyone.

According to Mixmag, Madam X was included on Holy Ship's 'hip hop party' line-up, which kind of misrepresents her grime and drum n bass centric sets. This is seemingly why this actor bloke, James Earl, decided to turn down the fader on Madam's X's decks, grab a mic and declare "What is this shit? What's happened to my hip hop room? Where's my trap at?"

Fortunately a room full of clubbing shipmates who had been rather enjoying the set promptly booed the party-stopper off stage, leaving the DJ to her own devices once again.

She wrote on Instagram later: "To the ass-wipe who felt the need to come on my set, grab the mic and slew my music for not being 'hip hop' enough - you can jog on. I am not responsible for the incongruent programming. Although I was placed on the hip hop stage, I will ALWAYS do me and play my shit. Never in all my years of DJing have I experienced such distasteful, tacky behaviour".

She added: "So much love to the crowd for booing the bell-end off. Hope he crawls back into the ignorant hole he came from".
