Lynyrd Skynyrd man dies

Artist News Obituaries

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Billy Powell has died at the age of 56 from a suspected heart attack. He was at his home in Florida when he began having trouble breathing and called emergency services, but was dead by the time paramedics arrived.

Powell was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, but his family settled in Florida following the death of his father in 1960. He began learning piano whilst at school, and for a short period following his 1970 graduation studied music at community college.

At this time he joined Lynyrd Skynyrd as a roadie, but did not become the band’s keyboardist until 1972. The group’s popularity began to grow in the next couple of years, and it was in 1974 that their biggest hit, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, was released.

Powell was of course involved in the 1977 Mississippi plane crash that killed his fellow band mates Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, as well as the band’s road manager. Powell sustained severe facial lacerations – his nose was almost torn off by the impact – and damage to his right knee.

He rejoined the band in 1987 for a reunion, and remained an active member up until his death. Only one member of the original line up, Gary Rossington, now remains.

He is survived by his wife and four children.

Berman disbands Silver Jews to fight dad

Artist News

The frontman of cult indie band Silver Jews, David Berman, has announced that he has split up the band, which he originally formed with Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich of Pavement in 1989, cancelling all forthcoming tour dates, so that he can devote his time to telling the world how much he hates his dad.

This is not just teenage rebellion (not least because Berman is 42). His father is Washington-based lobbyist Richard Berman, described by US TV documentary series ’60 Minutes’ as “Dr Evil”, and who has fought against consumer, animal welfare and environmental groups in the interests of his clients in the food, alcohol and tobacco markets.

Writing on the Silver Jews message board, Berman Jr said: “Now that the Joos are over I can tell you my gravest secret. Worse than suicide, worse than crack addiction: My father. You might be surprised to know he is famous, for terrible reasons. My father is a despicable man. My father is a sort of human molester. An exploiter. A scoundrel. A world historical motherfucking son of a bitch (sorry Grandma)”.

He continued: “A couple of years ago I demanded he stop his work. Close down his company or I would sever our relationship. He refused. He has just gotten worse. More evil. More powerful. We’ve been ‘estranged’ for over three years. … He props up fast food/soda/factory farming/childhood obesity and diabetes/drunk driving/second hand smoke”.

“He attacks animal lovers, ecologists, civil action attorneys, scientists, dieticians, doctors, teachers. His clients include everyone from the makers of Agent Orange to the Tanning Salon Owners of America. He helped ensure the minimum wage did not move a penny from 1997-2007!”

Speaking about his decision to change his career, the musician said: “This winter I decided that the SJs were too small of a force to ever come close to undoing a millionth of all the harm he has caused. To you and everyone you know. Literally, if you eat food or have a job, he is reaching you…”

“Previously I thought, through songs and poems and drawings I could find and build a refuge away from his world. But there is the matter of justice … The desire for it actually burns. It hurts. There needs to be something more. I’ll see what that might be”.

You can read more about Richard Berman here.

New Smashing Pumpkins song to appear on Superbowl ad

Brands & Merch Business News

The Smashing Pumpkins sued EMI last year when the major allowed Pepsi to include some of their music in its big MP3 giveaway campaign which was, if I remember rightly, launched during the mega-TV viewing bonanza that is the Super Bowl.

I seem to also remember the band’s lawsuit said that the association with Pepsi, which they hadn’t approved, damaged their “artistic integrity”.

Which is true, if you want artistic integrity you should never work with teeth rotting fizzy drinks, integritous artists do deals with world polluting, oil guzzling car firms.

A brand new Smashing Pumpkins song called ‘FOL’ will soundtrack a new ad from Hyundai during this weekend’s big game. Can’t wait.

Meatloaf, who will appear in the first episode on 2 Mar and read ‘The Lamb Who Came For Dinner’, says this: “You need to have fun with reading and, if it’s scary, make them shiver under the covers. If it’s friendly and happy, make them feel fuzzy and warm”.

Other music c’lebs set to do the children’s show are Mel C and Alesha Dixon. Both of whom I like.

Madonna divorce a good thing, says Ritchie’s dad

Guy Ritchie’s dad John has said that he’s happy that his son’s marriage to Madonna is well and truly over.

He’s quoted by In Touch as saying that “the worst thing would be if they reconciled”, and adds that he’s glad to see the singer spending time with boyfriends as it means she won’t be back looking for her ex.

John Ritchie was understandably upset last year after Madonna said insulting things about Guy at a concert, and said she was “horrid”.

Anyway, he also revealed that the divorced couple continue to deal amicably with one another, for the sake of the kids. “There are no big arguments between them. All they discuss is the children”, he said.

Joaquin Phoenix’s rap career is real, okay?

And Finally Artist News

A publicist for actor Joaquin Phoenix has said that his new career in hip hop is not a prank, despite what friends might say.

Recent reports claimed that sources close to the star had said that the star’s not-great performance at a Las Vegas nightclub, filmed by bro-in-law Casey Affleck, was all part of a hoax, or “art-project”.

Rep Susan Patricola says his career plans are real, however, that he really has retired from acting, and is to pursue music. She told MTV News, “He intends on exploring his musical interests, despite speculative, negative or positive reactions”.

Well, I expect it will all come out at some point, if it is a hoax. And then we can all laugh uproariously at the hilarity of it all.

Eamonn vs Rihanna: It’s on

And Finally Artist News

It’s the biggest battle in music since Fiddy versus Kanye. All the kids are talking about it. And the adults. And some small animals.

But just in case you’ve not heard, there ain’t no love between Eamonn Holmes and Rihanna anymore. In fact, it doesn’t sound like there was a lot in the first place, with Holmes saying now that he’d like to give the singer a slap and make her “wise up”. But only if she was his daughter.

Apparently slapping young women and shouting at them when you’re not a blood relation is frowned upon, particularly on TV.

The Sky News presenter told Star magazine: “I find the entourages that some people come with, especially the Americans, really pathetic. Rihanna, for example, is a beautiful girl, but if she was your daughter, you’d give her a slap and tell her to wise up. She is surrounded by people who treat her like a little flower”.

To be fair, he does actually have a point. Are you a parent of a pop star who is surrounded by yes men? Start slapping now.

Oink uploaders sentenced to community service

Business News Digital Legal Top Stories

Remember OiNK, the UK-based BitTorrent tracker which offered links to all sorts of illegal content and which was closed down by the authorities in October 2007?

Well, four of the most prominent uploaders of illegal content to the service have been sentenced for the various copyright infringement crimes they committed. The four uploaders in question pleaded guilty last December to making music available via the OiNK community without the permission of the content owners.

Sentenced at Teesside Crown Court, uploader one Steven Diprose got 180 hours community service and was ordered to pay £378 court costs. Uploader two Michael Myers was ordered to pay a £500 fine. Uploader three got 100 hours community service and £378 costs. Uploader four James Garner got 50 hours community service and £378 costs.

There seems to be mixed opinions to the sentences among the BitTorrent community. Some reckon the judge too readily accepted the record industry’s case for the four uploader’s actions causing them commercial damage.

Others, though, reckon the OiNK boys all got off quite lightly, and that the sentences won’t provide that big a deterrent to those who continue to illegally share music via Torrent trackers and other web services. That said, sources say that only strong legal representation and a plethora of good references from respectable citizens helped the defendents avoid custodial sentences, which were considered by the court.

TorrentFreak quote a source close to one of the convicted infringers thus: “[The Judge] swallowed the prosecution line completely that initial seeders were causing major damage to the copyright holders, and particularly uploaders who uploaded before the official release date. The fact that all the early uploads were only one or two days early and that three out four of the uploaders bought their CDs online did not sway him. All the retailers, quite naturally, denied this”.

The cases against a fifth uploader to the OiNK community, plus the guy behind the service, Alan Ellis, are ongoing and will return to court in March.

Business as usual at 2Entertain despite co-owner administration

Business News Labels & Publishers Retail Top Stories

The Woolworths Group, the parent company of the now defunct Woolies retail chain and music distributor eUK, went into administration yesterday, with Deloitte brought in to wind everything up.

With most of the Woolworths empire already dismantled that’s only really news in relation to 2Entertain, the DVD and music company jointly owned by the Woolworths Group and the BBC’s commercial division BBC Worldwide. 2Entertain is a video publisher, and also owns a production company and the Demon Music Group, one of the UK’s biggest independent record companies.

2Entertain has so far managed to generally avoid being affected by the chaos caused by the liquidation of its co-owner and sister firms, and the management there yesterday insisted that while the Woolworths Group was in administration it remained a going concern.

BBC Worldwide is in talks with the Woolies administrator regarding the sale of the former retailer’s 40% stake.

A spokesman for the Beeb said yesterday: “BBC Worldwide would like to make it clear that that 2Entertain is not in administration. 2Entertain remains a profitable and well funded business and BBC Worldwide remains in talks with the administrator of Woolworths Group plc regarding the sale of the company’s 40% stake in the joint venture”.

Take That reveal darker side of fame…

Artist News Top Stories

The members of Take That have frankly discussed fame the first time around in a new interview with Q Magazine.

The band’s Howard Donald admitted that the band’s 1996 break-up left him feeling suicidal. “I didn’t want us to split… I was pissed off”, he is quoted as saying. “I walked out the hotel and I wanted to throw myself into the Thames … but I thought ‘knowing me I’ll end up in the middle of the river and the tide will go out and I’ll be in the papers stuck in the Thames mud'”.

Gary Barlow, meanwhile, coughed to having had encounters with fans. He told the magazine: “As soon as we went abroad we wiped our memories of what we were allowed to do. In Amsterdam I slept with a fan. A chubby Dutch girl. And carried on from there. We just had a lot of fun. I don’t feel any guilt about how much sex I had”.

Mark Owen also admitted that he “did all right” with the groupies, but regretted it, having been in a relationship at the time.

Zappa widow loses case against Zappa-fest

Business News Legal Live Business

The widow of the late great Frank Zappa has failed to stop a German festival using her husband’s name and image.

As previously reported, Gail Zappa and her family trust sued the owners of a German Frank Zappa fan club over their annual Zappanale Festival, demanding that they stop using the family’s name and remove a bronze sculpture of the avant-garde musician from the town where the fest takes place. They also sued for 250,000 euros in damages.

But a court in Dusseldorf has thrown out Zappa’s case, ruling that organisers of Zappanale can continue to use that name, plus the late musician’s image in its branding and on its merchandise, because doing so, the judge said, did not violate any of Gail Zappa’s rights.

The widow’s case was seemingly weakened because she could not prove she used Zappa’s name and image herself in Germany, and also because she had known about the event since its launch in 1990 (three years before her husband’s death) and had only chosen to take action in 2008.

Thomas Dippel, who runs the fan club who promote the festival, told reporters: “We have always been certain that we have the older rights. We have also patented the name of the festival with the German patent office. Gail Zappa only applied for the patent of her own rights in 2002”.

The ruling means the 2009 Zappanale festival can go ahead from 12-16 Aug as planned.

Thriller video director sues over royalties

Business News Legal

Michael Jackson has reportedly signed up to participate (in a production rather than performing capacity, I think) in a Broadway musical version of ‘Thriller’, which will transform the legendary fourteen minute video for the title track of Jacko’s sixth album into a full stage show.

I think this project has nothing to do with the ‘Thriller Live’ show that has just opened in London’s West End to very mixed reviews, but don’t quote me on that.

The new show will, like the London musical, incorporate songs from Jackson’s catalogue, though whereas the West End production includes Jackson Five songs too I think this new project will just take songs from ‘Thriller’ and ‘Off The Wall’.

Anyway, this is all relevant to the pop courts because the director of the original video, John Landis, has just sued the singer claiming he is owed royalties relating to the famous pop promo. Whether the news of the Broadway project prompted the lawsuit I’m not sure.

According to his contract with Jacko, Landis is due 50% of any revenues generated by the video or its accompanying documentary. He is also due regular revenue updates. He claims that he has heard nothing for four years. He is suing Jacko and his people for “fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct”. It’s thought Landis may be due up to $1 million in unpaid royalties.

Glade Festival announces new site

Business News Live Business

Organisers of the Glade festival have announced that they’ve found their new site, and it’s one that will allow the event the freedom to play loud music long into the night – not the case at their previous home.

The exact location will be revealed to ticket holders closer to the time, but organisers say that the site is close to Winchester and well served by public transport.

Nick Ladd, Glade’s director, says this: “We are really happy with our new home, it’s really tailor-made for us – beautiful countryside, an event friendly council and no neighbours, so we can enjoy dance music as mother nature intended – outdoors and loud!”

Details of this year’s line up are expected to be announced in the next few weeks. Tickets for the dance event, which takes place from Thursday 16 Jul to Sunday 19 Jul, are on sale now priced at £125, but students can get them for £99 as long as they can prove their status.
